Does It Matter If I Attend the Funeral?

mkj • August 16, 2023

Today, like never before, family and friends are spread out all over the country. School, jobs, or just personal preferences can cause us to move hundreds or thousands of miles away from each other. Combine distance with work/family responsibilities and financial or health issues and getting together for a funeral can prove to be very difficult. Our neighbors in Lake Ronkonkoma, Holbrook, and Central Islip might wonder why it’s worth the expense, time, and effort.

From our observations and experiences, funerals are a critical part to beginning the healing process. After losing someone special, you may be dealing with a tremendous amount of grief. Although this pain can be intense, it must not be ignored. A funeral helps you accept the reality of your loss and gives you a chance to address these emotions with others who are also mourning. You’ll be amazed at the comfort you will receive from being around family or friends at a visitation, service, or reception.

The funeral is also a very important ceremony that marks this pivotal transition point in your life. The practice is seen in human culture throughout history, and not just with funerals. Ceremonies honor life transitions like marriage, baptisms, graduations, and more. A funeral service recognizes the life that was lived and honors the contributions your friend or family member made. It gives you an opportunity to celebrate and reflect upon your loved one’s accomplishments, friendships, family, leadership, and love. It’s a beautiful time that shouldn’t be missed, if at all possible.

If you weren’t incredibly close to the deceased, but perhaps you have friends or family members who were , attending the funeral sends them a message that you are there for them, that you care about their pain, and that their loved one made an impact on your life as well. It’s a mark of a good friend to show your support and comfort when they need it most. We always remember the people who were there for us, not just in the good times, but in the difficult times.

Here at Moloney Family Funeral Homes we will do everything we can to help you plan a meaningful funeral that fits and celebrates your loved one’s personality and values and helps your family find closure. We’re also here for you with aftercare resources. While attending the funeral is a step towards healing, it’s only one of the first of many. We can help connect you with in-person or online grief counseling as well as our annual remembrance services.
