Robert Carroll Driscoll

d. April 1, 2022

Robert Carroll Driscoll of Woodbridge, Virginia passed away peacefully, on April 1, 2022 with his wife Barbara and their children by his side after a valiant decades-long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Harrison, New York to Michael and Mary Driscoll, Bob graduated from The College of the Holy Cross in 1950, and then honorably served his country fighting in the Korean War from 1950-1953 as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. Following his military service, Bob obtained his Master’s in Business Administration in 1957 from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where his son-in-law and grandson later attended. During the summer of 1960 Bob met Barbara – his wife of 61 years – in Spring Lake NJ. They were married in September 1961 and together raised their five children in Smithtown, New York where they lived for 35 years. After retiring, they moved to Woodbridge, VA where Bob resided for 17 years before coming back to Long Island in February to be cared for with his family close by.

Bob spent the majority of his career with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. As his entire foundation was built on his faith, it was the perfect place for him to spend over three decades of his working life. Catholic Charities’ first efforts were geared towards taking care of children orphaned following the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The agency grew over time to provide emergency meals and financial aid to the elderly and provide educational help for intellectually disabled children. Catholic Charities later added emergency homeless shelters and advocated for affordable housing. A devout Catholic, Bob relished the opportunity to help others in need and serve the Lord each day.

As anyone that knew him could attest to Bob was devout about two things: first and foremost his Catholicism and secondly the San Francisco Giants baseball team. In his briefcase for his nearly two-hour commute from Eastern Long Island to New York City, Bob carried a Bible from which he started and ended his day reading. As for his devotion to the Giants, Bob loved the team from when they played at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. He studied the box scores meticulously, even in his later years when his Parkinson’s began to take a more noticeable toll, and never missed a game. In 2012, at age 84, Bob realized his dream to see a Giants World Series game and was there in person to see them clinch the World Series pennant against the Detroit Tigers, on October 28, 2012.

Outside of baseball, of course, his first love was his family. Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years Barbara, his children David, Jodi and her husband Jim, Danielle (predeceased), SuZanne and her husband Jimmy, Steven and his wife Sue, his two sisters Nancy Capik (predeceased) and Jeanne Driscoll, as well as his eight grandchildren Liam, Kyler, Julia, Caelyn, Dylan, Maitreya, JayTee and Travis.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on April 8, 2022 at 10:15 am at St. Phillip & James, 454 N Country Road, St. James, NY 11780. A visitation with the family will be held from 5pm to 9pm on April 7th at Moloney’s Hauppauge Funeral Home, 840 Wheeler Road (Rte. 111), Hauppauge, New York 11788.

Memorial contributions in the name of Robert C. Driscoll may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018 or at: www.parkinson.org
