Marietta Veligdan

d. January 14, 2021

Marietta Veligdan, 68, of Manorville, NY passed away suddenly at her home on Thursday January 14, 2021. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on June 11, 1952, to Samuel and Ann Scuro. She received her B.A. and M.A. in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Pittsburgh. Marietta met her husband, Jim, on a blind date in 1970 coordinated by their older siblings, and the two were inseparable for the next 50 years. They married as soon as they graduated, and they had two sons, Matthew and Benjamin. They moved to Long Island in 1985 and lived in a house that they designed and built together. Marietta worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in the Center Moriches School District until her retirement in 2014.

Marietta was always encouraging and affirming. She had a passion and gift for nurturing children, especially with their speech, and she loved nothing more than helping a student overcome a stutter or perfect a “th” sound, knowing that it would empower the child to overcome other obstacles with confidence throughout life. Marietta was a tireless supporter of her sons’ musical endeavors and was rightfully granted the title of #1 Fan. Even more devoted to her husband, she steadfastly encouraged his wide-ranging scientific research and hobbies over the years, even letting him design and build an actual airplane in the living room. Taking joy in the everyday, she loved to laugh and relax with her husband everywhere they went, from basking in the warmth of the wood-burning stove at home to strolling on a far-away beach. A fun-loving woman, she thrived most when helping others enjoy life. She delighted in working hard behind the scenes to make others’ lives better, quietly giving gifts, sending cards and printed photos, and surprising family and friends with pizzelles at Christmas. Her deep and abiding faith in Jesus gave her genuine hope and strength each day of her life. She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel Scuro. She is survived by her mother, Ann Scuro; her husband, James; her sister, Carol Scuro (Brad Emery); two sons, Matthew (Elsa) and Benjamin (Tracy); and three grandchildren, Nora, Joshua, and Marty. She will be greatly missed.

Friends will be received on Monday January 18, from 12pm to 4pm, at Moloney-Sinnicksons Funeral Home in Center Moriches. The funeral service will follow immediately at 4:30pm at The Harbor Church (25 Frowein Rd., Center Moriches). In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Marietta’s honor be made to Compass Care (www.compasscare.info). One of Marietta’s passions was charitable giving, especially to places where she could see a tangible difference being made. Compass Care helps care for pregnant women, both before and after they give birth, as an alternative to abortion.
