d. March 23, 2022

Lajos F. “Louie” Steinbrecher
Lajos “Louie” Steinbrecher of Miller Place, NY, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday March 23, 2022, with his wife of 63 years Irma by his side and surrounded by family.
Louie was born May 7, 1930, in Budapest, Hungary, son of Lajos and Katherine Steinbrecher. He grew up in Hungary during the Great Depression, World War II, and the oppression of living behind the Soviet Iron Curtain. He escaped Hungary after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and emigrated to the United States in January 1957 where he settled in Ronkonkoma, NY. He met the love of his life Irma (Vogt) Steinbrecher at the Medford Brauhaus in 1957, married in 1959 and settled in Miller Place.
Louie is the loving father of Kathy Shoemaker (Sal), Lou Steinbrecher (Patti), Laurie Hatch (Jim), Jeffrey Steinbrecher (Alice). Cherished grandfather of Kyle (Betsy), Mark (Chrissy), and Kevin Shoemaker, Kerri, Mary Beth, and Thomas Steinbrecher, Andrew (Michaela), Kirsten and Jamie Hatch, Jeffrey, Patrick, and Keith Steinbrecher and Mary Kate (Zec) Gajadhar, and Great-grandfather of Sofia and Tilly Shoemaker. He is survived by his Sister Verra and family in Hungary.
Louie was a master mechanic and welder who started his career in the US at Lawrence Aviation in Port Jefferson. He spent most of his career working for T. J. Burke & Sons, Huntington, NY, working on heavy construction equipment. He enjoyed traveling around Long Island conducting service calls from the cement plants and cemeteries of NYC to the East End sand and gravel operations.
He was a member of the Long Island Antique Power Association and spent his thirty years in retirement restoring lathes, drill presses, milling machines, and any other piece of mechanical equipment that needed to be fixed or refurbished. Many days you could find him working out of his backyard shed tinkering on something. His grandchildren spent many happy days laughing and playing in his backyard with him nearby.
He was a member of St. Louis de Montfort Roman Catholic Church in Sound Beach for over 50 years where he served as an usher.
