Joseph “Joe” DeStefano, born on November 17, 1943, in Mineola, NY to Giacomo and Mary, sadly passed away at the age of 80 on November 18, 2023. His peaceful departure was amidst the love and comfort of his family. Joe leaves behind his beloved wife, Ruthann, and cherished sister, Josephine(Jackie).
Joe, who was an accomplished engineer, inventive entrepreneur, and devoted family man, had a vibrant journey through life has left an indelible mark on many lives and sectors.
Born to soar, Joe embarked on his academic journey at the LaGuardia Academy of Aeronautics, class of 1964, which paved the foundation for a successful career in engineering. Following graduation, he relocated upstate to build on his knowledge at Rochester Technical Institute (RIT) whilst contributing his expertise at the renowned Xerox Corporation.
Making history, Joe became the first union Crew Chief of Pan Am’s Aircraft Mechanic department at LaGuardia Airport. His journey then led him to Allomatic in New Hyde Park, where he started as a technician and, with dedication and perseverance, climbed his way to a Management position.
Harnessing his gathered knowledge and expertise, Joe ventured into entrepreneurship in 1978 with Five Point, a small parts manufacturing business in Queens, NY. His entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. After selling Five Point, Joe was appointed as head of the burgeoning automotive parts manufacturing company, Auto line, in Copaigue, NY.
Here, Joe channelled his inventor spirit, patented his Cobra Clamp booster cable line, and spurred the growth of Cobraline, which later gave birth to the largest auto parts chain on Long Island, US1 Auto Parts. Not one to rest on his laurels, he continued with entrepreneurial ventures establishing his own chain of three US1 Auto Parts stores, and even tried his hand at international retail auto parts in Avellino, Italy.
His brilliant career, however, was just one facet of his life. Joe’s love for his children Joseph(Denise), Cheryl(Joseph Cobelo), and Gary(Lisa), his Grandchildren Carissa(Dylan), Sara, Joseph, Gabriella, Justyne, Leann, Julianna, Giavanna & Great Grandchildren Aspen & Linden. Each one carries with them a piece of his character, mirrored in their actions and values. His obituary is an account of a remarkable life, one marked by achievements and love, and shall serve as a lasting tribute to his legacy.
