John P. Petito

On Tuesday, September 15, 2020, John Paul Petito of Moriches, NY passed away at age 89.

John was born on May 17, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Rose (Gannotta). Retiring at age 75, John served in the U.S. Air Force for 11.5 years and as Superintendent of Highways and Commissioner of the Department of Public Works for the Town of Islip for over 45 years. On March 29, 1952 he married his sweetheart, Genevieve “Gen” Vetere. They raised three sons, John, Joseph, and Jay and one daughter, Janet.

John loved to hunt, fish, boat, golf, and laugh with family and friends in Florida and NY. Possessing a lifelong skill for drawing, he illustrated technical reconnaissance in the Intelligence Department of Mitchell Air Force Base, designed landscape architecture and created fine art.

John was preceded in death by his fathers John and Joseph, his mother, Rose, and younger brother Gaetano “Guy”. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; his four children, John (Fran), Janet (Timothy Donovan), Joseph (Anaé), and Jay (Donna); his five grandchildren, Denise and Timothy III (Donovan), Joseph Jr. and Anaé Jr. (Petito), and Jay Jr. (Petito); three great-grandchildren (Victoriana and Jameson Santiago), and Timothy IV (Donovan); and his younger sister Teresa (Frank Caputo).

Loving father of John, Janet Donovan, Joseph and Jay Petito. Cherished Grandfather of five and Great-Grandfather of three. Reposing at Moloney-Sinnickson’s Funeral Home 203 Main Street, Center Moriches N.Y. Where a religious service will be held at 4:00pm Sunday.  Funeral Mass Monday 9:30 am at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
