Helen Griffin

Helen Griffin (nee Chernesky), age 97, of Lake Ronkonkoma, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at her home. Helen Griffin was born on July 8, 1924 to Anna and Sylvester Chernesky in New York City. Helen married the love of her life, Raymond Griffin Sr. on May 28, 1944.  They adored each other and enjoyed each other’s company. Together they raised three sons, Raymond Jr., James, and Robert. As a mother, she was involved in St. Joseph’s Church and School in Lake Ronkonkoma, and with Boy Scout Troop 272. Throughout the years, she worked as a crossing guard for Suffolk County, a bus driver for Sachem Public Schools, and an attendance secretary at Sachem North High School. Helen has been a resident of Lake Ronkonkoma since 1956 and was actively involved in her community throughout her life. She regularly volunteered with St. Joseph’s Church Parish Outreach and soup kitchen, Friends of Sachem Public Library, VFW Post 4927 Auxiliary, and Meals on Wheels. She was also a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph’s Church. She was a proud member of the Red Hats Society. Helen enjoyed playing mahjong with friends and participating in the knitting and crocheting club of Saint Elizabeth Church. She loved to travel and enjoyed doing her daily crossword puzzles and cryptograms. Above all else came Helen’s love for her family. She was a caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
