Edward Joseph O'Neill

d. March 5, 2024

On March 5,2024 Edward Joseph O’Neill was promoted to Glory. He was called home to
Heaven to be reunited with his beautiful bride of 58 years Mary. Joe (as he preferred to be
called) was born in Brooklyn on February 13,1939. Second son to Mary & Edward
O’Neill(Predeceased). He had 3 brothers, Jimmy, Johnny & Bobby. He was raised in Middle
Village, Queens. He loved being outdoors, playing ball and running on the train tracks with
his friends across the street from his house. He graduated from St. Ann’s Academy. He was
a tremendous ball player. He was recruited by the Cleveland Indians. Everyone in the
neighborhood knew Joe and feared meeting up with him on the field. He was an excellent
softball player and played against King and his Court. He had a fantastic singing voice and
would sing Elvis(his idol) at any given chance. He met the love of his life Mary and married
her on November 6,1965. A love story for everyone to admire and take a page out of their
book. He is survived by his daughter’s Kathleen and Ann Marie. He was their first love. His
love was silent but yet spoke volumes. His care and protection will remain as a pillar of
strength throughout their lives. Son-in-laws who loved and respected him tremendously
Don and Tom. Best known as Pop to his 3 grandchildren who filled his heart with sooo much
love and brought all the joy to his life. Matthew, Daniel, and Stella. He spent so much time
with them. From watching Disney animated movies, going to every sporting event, being
their biggest, loudest cheerleader and giving them all his sporting knowledge. Joe had
many nieces and nephews who also loved him so much. They all wanted to hang out and
hear all his stories. He always had a good story. He would tell as many stories to as many
people would listen. His knowledge of baseball, especially the Brooklyn Dodgers and New
York Yankees was immeasurable. He knew all the players and all the stats. He loved being
on the water. He owned 2 boats. He would love to go fishing, crabbing and clamming. Best
clam shucker ever!!! He could sit on the beach for hours. Jump in the water, dive through the
biggest waves, soak up the sun and have a couple of gin & tonics. He worked for Local 584
as a milkman loading trucks. He was a forman and Recording Secretary who was admired &
respected in those positions. He retired and became an avid golfer. Loved playing the game
and watching the Masters(his favorite). One of the biggest joys of his life was becoming the
sports bus driver for Mercy High School. It really gave him a huge blessing in his life. He
loved driving that bus!! He became Joe the Bus Driver. The coaches, teachers,
administrator’s and secretaries all loved him and enjoyed his presence (oh and what a
presence it was) in the school. But the kids!!! The kids made it all… he loved them so
much..most of all his softball girls. He drove them, sideline coached them, encouraged
them..adored them. The feeling was mutual. He went to graduation parties and weddings.
The bond was strong. That’s who Joe was. He left a mark on anyone who he has ever been
in contact with. He was a force of nature who was beloved by many.
