My deepest sympathy to Joe's family; Before he left for Florida he attended morning Mass at Parish of the Holy Cross as often as he could. It was good to reconnect with him there. He is surely in Heaven with his dear Marie. May they both rest in peace.

Arthur Gianelli left a message on January 26, 2022:
It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Joe. He was a colleague and friend for over 50 years. To capture his extraordinary life in a few words is impossible. He was the epitome of a philosopher, a great mind, always searching for truth, an exceptional scholar, always seeking the wisdom of the past, a master educator who bestowed upon his students that wisdom coupled with his own. He was also a saint among men in this world, never missing an opportunity to help members of his family, members of his community, members of his parish, regardless of the expense and inconvenience to himself. He was a man of God, always seeking to do God's Will, a man who gave his life to his Creator. It is not often that such a man walks with us in this world, It was an honor and a privilege to have known him, to have shared conversations with him, and to have worked with him all these years. His memory will always be with me. To his children I say how fortunate you were to have him as a father and hope that memories of him grow richer as time goes on. Joe Califano was a truly remarkable man.
