Clayton R Huey

d. March 3, 2024

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, community leader, and
friend. Clayton R. Huey passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024 with his children by his side.
To the end, he was very proud of his family and the impact he made in his community.
Clayton was born in 1931 in Elmira, New York. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy in
1949, and attended nearby SUNY Cortland where he received a degree in education. He
married his beloved wife Joan, and the following year welcomed twin boys, James and Michael.
In 1954 the young family moved to Long Island where Clayton pursued his career in education.
He settled in Center Moriches, and was hired by his home town school district in 1955 as a
physical education teacher and coach. There they had two additional children, Leanne and
Laura.
While teaching, Clayton went on to pursue an administration degree at NYU. He became
principal of the Center Moriches Elementary school, and eventually assumed the position as
Superintendent of Schools. He devoted over three decades to serving his local community, and
supporting both the teachers and students with the ultimate goal of ensuring that the best
possible educational experience was being provided. One example of this was the building of
the current high school. When he retired in 1986, he was both humbled and honored to have
had the elementary school named after him.
Clayton had additional attributes and interests beyond education. He served as the director of
Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the early 1960s. He was an avid golfer, and in his retirement acted as a
golf ranger at Rock Hill Country Club. He loved sports, and would always be one of the first to
ice skate on Kalers pond in the cold winter months. He was a die hard Yankees fan and looked
forward to watching a good baseball game with his children. By far, his most favorite thing to do
was spend time with his family.
In addition to his four children he is survived by his daughters-in-law Coreen Huey and Doreen
Huey, and son-in-law Thomas Johnson. His seven grandchildren Dawn and husband Jonathon
Row; David Huey; Becky Huey; Lauren and husband Michael Kleban; Andrew Huey; Emily
Johnson; and Sarah and husband Michael Briles. His eight great-grandchildren Skylar, Landon,
Laila, Sierra, Brianna, Anderson, Carson, and Braylin.
