Carmine was a good friend. We grew up together in Maspeth. We played a lot of sports together as teenagers...mostly baseball and softball. As a teenager Carmine was naturally very strong and a powerful hitter. Not many people remember that Carmine played football, too. In 1957 Carmine and I decided to try out for the Ressurection-Ascention Pop Warner football team. There was a 160 pound weight limit and an age limit of 19 years. We were both 17 and about 160 pounds. Although we had never played tackle football, we wanted to see what it was like. We went to the tryouts, and found that R-A had a well-organized program running for years with lots of older returning players returning from the previous season. We both made the team (me as an offensive guard and Carmine as a defensive line backer). That fall, every day after school Carmine and I would run about 2 miles from our homes in Maspeth to Juniper Valley park for practice, and then run back home afterward. Our games were on Saturdays all over Queens and Brooklyn. We had an undefeated regular season that Fall, but lost the championship game in the finals of the playoffs.

Dear Papa, I miss you Papa, but I know you’re in a much better place. I love you so much and I hope the Mets win the World Series this year because I know how much you love them (even though I do love those Yankees) :) I will cherish all of the memories we have made together, I couldn’t have asked for a better Grandpa. You are strong, you are resilient, you are amazing. If there is anybody who embodies determination, it is you. Your life lessons and the way you lived your own life have taught me a lot about my own, and how I want to live every day to the fullest with strength and the mindset to never give up. I know that these characteristics can push me beyond any obstacles that may lie ahead in the future. You showed us all that; you never gave up and it inspired, and will always continue to inspire, all of us. I love you, and I know you’re watching over us up above in Heaven :) Love, Joe
