Winifred Theresa Sulander

Winifred Theresa Sulander, 86, of Hauppauge passed away at home peacefully in her sleep on October 31, 2020. Known to everyone as Theresa, she was born in Manhattan to the late James and Ellen Boland (née Kenny),immigrants from Ireland. She was predeceased by her two sisters Mary Boland, Eileen Travers (James), and two brothers Christopher (Natalia), and Thomas (Christine).
Theresa graduated High School then went into the convent to pursue a calling to become a nun in the Catholic Church. She met her first husband, the late Edward Michael White, a few months before completing her training. He was in the Air Force, leaving for Japan and asked her to wait a year for him to come home. She did, and they were married in 1958. Their only child, Patricia was born in 1959. Eddie became a member of the FDNY, Engine 91 in Spanish Harlem, NY. He died in the line of duty June 2, 1962.
Theresa married her second husband the late Elmer Sulander in 1970. He was an engineer with Grumman who mainly worked with the systems of the F-14 fighter plane. He had three children with Virginia his first wife, Lynn, Erik and Craig.
Theresa is survived by daughter Patricia, her son in law Richard and their son, her beloved grandson Thomas Edward. She is also survived by her stepchildren Lynn, Erik, and Craig Sulander, their spouses Vicki, Sali and Bob, and children Emanuele and Artug. Also survived by her loving nephews John Travers, Christopher and Michael Boland, and niece Theresa Canchola ( née Boland) and their spouses and children.
Theresa collected green depression glass and made ceramics years ago. She loved to travel and had been across the US as well as to Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, Spain, the Canary Islands and Ireland. She was a devout Catholic and loved helping others. She was a proud Republican and loved our country. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. “The 9:45 mass at St. Thomas More R.C. As the mass starts in an area of the church where there are no cameras, in the beginning there will only be sound. The picture will begin with the casket being carried down the aisle.“
