Vasu Shah passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2024, surrounded by family singing bhajans. She was married for more than 58 years and is survived by her husband, Mahendra, and her two children, Samir and Ami, along with their respective partners and seven grandchildren.
Born in Vadodara, Gujarat to Chandulal and Savita Shah, Vasu was raised in a family that valued education and loved music. She studied architecture to join the family construction business and graduated as one of five women in her class from MS University, Vadodara. Vasu immigrated to America after marriage and was committed to supporting her extended family. She earned her architectural license in the United States in 1999 and contributed to several well-known buildings in Philadelphia, including the Justice Center and Philadelphia Convention Center.
Vasu and her family moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1974, which they fondly called home for 25 years. As part of the growing Gujarati community there, she took an active role in preserving traditions for future generations. She later moved with her husband to Gaithersburg, MD where they further extended their friend circle and after retirement they moved to Syosset, NY, where she took sitar and voice lessons, and enjoyed time with her grandchildren. Throughout her journey, Vasu enjoyed music and found communities where she could sing kirtans and bhajans.
Vasu is remembered as a vibrant, kind, and generous soul who accepted people unconditionally. Her soul will forever be connected to ours and her legacy will be carried forward through all those who knew her. She was our rock, our strength, and the beacon of our family. We wish that when you think of her and see her smile, you too feel her love.
