Thomas Stephen Fahy died peacefully at home on the morning of October 27, 2024 with his loving and devoted wife by his side having just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. Despite his illness, ever the romantic, he insisted on being clean shaven and sending out for champagne to mark the special occasion. He was 78.
Tom was a faithful and loving husband to Margaret (Fleming) Fahy, a loving father to his two surviving children Karin (Chris) Feil, and Roger (Suzanne) Fahy. He also held in his heart the cherished memories of his son Andy, who preceded him in death. Tom’s love for Andy was boundless and he often reminisced about the special moments they shared together. Tom was also a devoted grandfather to Erin and Thomas Feil, Kailey, Aidan, Gavin, Nora, and Elizabeth “Libby” Fahy.
Born in Manhattan on December 26, 1945 to Martin and Mary (McSharry) Fahy, Tom was a proud New Yorker and Irishman. During his childhood he spent many happy summers with his parents and siblings, Mary, Kathleen, and Patricia in Rockaway Beach. It was here that he developed a love of the ocean.
He attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and graduated from George Washington High School in Manhattan. After graduation he served in the National Guard until 1970.
He married his sweetheart Margaret, a Bronx girl, on October 26, 1968 and moved to Queens and then Holbrook NY where they resided for 45 years. He and his bride, as he lovingly referred to her throughout their life together, raised three children. Tom was a very generous man who always made others feel welcome and at ease. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic, treating people fairly, and being self-sufficient.
Born with the gift of gab Tom was a natural salesman who, for most of his career, sold carpet and commercial flooring in NYC, where he lovingly earned the nickname “Rugs”. A great storyteller, his quick-witted sense of humor is what stood apart. Often described as the life of the party, nobody made people laugh as much as Rugsy. When he wasn’t commuting into NYC on the LIRR, he enjoyed spending time at the beach in Montauk and eastern Long Island with his family and friends, where, in his younger days, you could catch him playing golf, fishing, or reading the latest Nelson DeMille novel.
A horseracing enthusiast who also was a passionate Green Bay Packers cheesehead, Tom enjoyed watching football games with family and friends often telling the story of the time he met Vince Lombardi, his hero.
Above all else though he loved spending time with family and cherished friends. He especially adored his time with his children and grandchildren. Either demanding they pose for another photo or sewing merit badges Tom, who was always there for everyone, could be counted on, if not off telling one-liners, to proudly share their latest adventures and accomplishments to anyone who would listen.
He is also survived by his siblings Mary Fahy, Kathleen (Fahy) Botten and Patricia Fahy along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Mary, his brother Martin, his son Andy, his cousin Margaret “Peggy” Treacy, her son Michael and husband Frank Addiego as well as his brother-in-law Dave Botten.
