Sylvia G Foley

d. January 8, 2024

Sylvia G. Foley, born Sylvia Thayer Gregory on September 30, 1923, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024.  Sylvia was born to George C. Gregory and Constance Heath in Richmond, Virginia.  She was the sixth of seven children and was the only remaining sibling at the time of her death.  Sylvia lived a full life, having lived to celebrate her 100th birthday with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren – her favorite saying being “all is right in my world with 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren”.  Her 5th great grandchild was born December 14, 2023 whom she got to see pictures of but never met.

Sylvia was married June 22, 1957 to John E. Foley, a beloved Center Moriches teacher, who pre-deceased her on April 27, 2006.  They made their residence in Center Moriches and raised their four children John (Cheryl), Anne, Patrick (Theresa) and Michael (Dianne) there.  They watched their family grow with the arrival of their grandchildren Ian, Katelyn, Zachary and Kate.  Sylvia further watched those grandchildren have children of their own. She also had five step-great grandchildren.

Sylvia was born to a prominent Richmond Virginia family and resided there until the 1950’s when she ventured out to California and met John while he was in the Army during the Korean War.  They fell in love and came “back East” where John was hired by Center Moriches School District.  They were married in St. John the Evangelist Church where they were active members for all their lives.

The arrangements have been finalized with the wake being Sunday, January 14th, from 3pm-7pm at Sinnickson-Moloney Funeral Home on Main Street in Center Moriches.  The funeral will be Monday, January 15th, at 9:30am at St. John the Evangelist RC Church across Main Street from the funeral home (Main Street and Ocean Ave).  Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

As Sylvia is being buried at a National Cemetery with her beloved husband, there can only be three floral arrangements to accompany her burial.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to either Ernie’s Place Food Pantry at St Johns Church, 25 Ocean Ave, Center Moriches, NY 11934 (which was a cause she supported) or to Moriches Nutrition Program, PO Box 135 (9 Lake Ave), Center Moriches, NY 11934 (which has wonderful delivery volunteers and provided a hot meal for mom every weekday).
