Obituary:

Salvatore J. Sassano died peacefully at home on April 13, 2015. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 24, 1927 to Ida and Joseph Sassano and raised with his brother, Joe, among a loving extended family of grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. As a young man, Sal was a swim team member and lifeguard, and his affinity for water likely inspired him to enlist and serve in the US Navy from 1951-1953. He married Jean Narkevics on April 24, 1954 and, in 1962, they moved their family from Stamford, Connecticut to the “farm country” of Commack, NY where they raised their three children, Ann, Nancy and Michael and where he resided for the rest of his life. Sal had a long and productive career in the insurance business, first with The American Plan Corporation and ending with the New York State Department of Insurance, from which he retired at the age of 78. He supported Jean in her career pursuits as a professional librarian and, upon her death in 1995, he proudly assumed her position on the Board of Trustees of the Commack Public Library, which he held until 2011. As part of a large and lively extended family that grew over the years, Sal was a quiet, yet loving and devoted Dad, Grandpa, Great-grandpa and Uncle who adorned his home with family photos and saved every note and card that he received from loved ones.

Sal was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Jean and is survived by his children Ann Truscello (John) of Holbrook, NY, Nancy (Robert Gillies) of North Logan, UT, and Michael (Jeannie Hildebrand) of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren Victoria Truscello Haynes (Michael) of New Castle, DE, Steven Sassano of Medford, NY and John Truscello of Boston, MA; great-grandchildren Michael and Hailey Haynes; brother Joseph (Carol) of South Bend, IN and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Home Instead Senior Care and Visiting Nurse Services and Hospice of Suffolk County for their skilled and compassionate care of Sal and support for all of them over the past month.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Services and Hospice of Suffolk County, the Commack Public Library, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
