Robert Howard Meyer, Jr. passed away peacefully at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson, NY, after a recent diagnosis of metastatic lung and brain cancer at the age of 79.

Born in Berkeley, CA, on August 1, 1945, to Mary (Zurich) and Robert Meyer Sr., Bob was raised in Locust Valley, New York, with his younger sister, Linda.

Bob attended Admiral Farragut Academy in New Jersey and C.W. Post College in Brookville, New York, and was a Phi Epsilon Pi Fraternity member.

In 1966, he married Nicole Laraque and moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he served at Lackland Air Force Base as a Sergeant specializing in Electronic Equipment and Crypto. The couple welcomed a daughter, Valerie, in 1967 and moved to Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Missouri, where Bob served until 1970.

After leaving the service, Bob and his family moved back to Long Island, joining the family business—a specialty store in Cold Spring Harbor called Gourmet Delights. As an active member of the Cold Spring Harbor community, he also served as President of the Cold Spring Harbor Merchant’s Association. He proudly volunteered for the Nassau County Auxiliary Police.

Bob’s second child, Stacie, was born in 1975. The family settled in the Commack/East Northport area.

After selling the store in 2001, Bob retired and relocated upstate to Afton, New York, fully embracing the country lifestyle. But Bob did not stay retired for long. It was from his beloved grandfather, “Pop,” that he inherited his love of tools and the ability to fix almost anything. So, he took a job that allowed him to incorporate his passion for electronics and computers as a salesperson for Circuit City. Once Circuit City closed, he found another position as an Armed Guard for Loomis Fargo.

When he finally retired again, Bob enjoyed the companionship of his rescued Akitas, Keisha and Larry. Later, Bob adopted a Chow mix named Josie, who accompanied him on car rides, doctor visits, and shopping in town. He frequently would say, “I sure got lucky with her!”

Bob frequently cooked and distributed homemade soup to his friends, neighbors, doctors, and the locals in town. This act of kindness and generosity brought him joy.

Bob’s hobbies included boating, keeping up with friends across the country on a HAM Radio, going for car rides, shooting sports, collecting tools, computers, and electronics.

Bob is survived by his daughters, two grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephew. He will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery on Wednesday, November 13, at 10 a.m.
