Peter J. Meechan

Peter Joseph Meechan, 78, of Baiting Hollow, New York died on Friday, September 8, 2017 after a series of strokes which he battled heroically through two decades of recovery and complications.

Peter was born on July 5, 1939 and grew up in Kearny, New Jersey, the youngest child of John and Rosina Meechan.

He began his career as a salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and moved to Colgate Palmolive where he was promoted from salesman to eventually National Sales Manager. This phase of his career brought his family to reside in Crystal Lake, Illinois for several years before returning to live in Long Island. Peter won many awards during the course of his career, including several “Salesman of the Year” awards, but he left the workforce at the onset of a stroke in 1997.   

Peter was a tireless provider for his family and in addition his wife and children, he also generously provided support for his mother and two of his grandsons, who he had a great deal of responsibility in raising.

He enjoyed politics, Notre Dame football, Montauk, and was a parishioner at St. John the Baptist Church in Wading River. 

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Kathy Meechan of Baiting Hollow, NY, daughters Rose (Frank) Morton, Loretta (Brian) Henry, Maggie Meechan and Mary Ellen Meechan. He was a devoted grandfather to Andrew Nucatola, Jason Nucatola, Jacob Meechan, Kyle Henry, Erin Henry, Keegan Dax Henry, Ellis Morton and Finley Morton.  

He is predeceased by his daughter, Kate Meechan.

Visitation Tuesday, September 12 from 2-4 and 7-9, and Funeral Mass Wednesday, September 13 at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Church in Wading River, NY.
