Michael Joseph Larkin, a beloved husband, son, brother and father of four and active volunteer at St. Patrick School and church in Smithtown, died unexpectedly at his home in Smithtown on Friday evening as he sat in his favorite chair. He was 44.
Michael is survived by his wife, Julia, and their children Michael, 9, Katie, 8, Colin, 5, and Jack, 3. He is also survived by his mother, Lois Larkin, of Centerport; brothers Patrick Larkin, of Morristown, N.J., and James Larkin, of Hummelstown, Pa.; sister Tara Tucker, of Centerport; mother- and father-in-law Gerri and Bob Leary, of Lakewood Ranch, Fla.; brothers-in-law Shea Leary, of Lakewood Ranch; Timothy Leary, of East Norwich; Bill Leary, of Miami; and Ward Tucker, of Centerport; and sisters-in-law Lauren Leary, of Lakewood Ranch; Meg Leary, of East Norwich; Roberta Leary, of Miami; Julie Larkin, of Hummelstown; and Mimi Larkin, of Morristown; as well as 16 nieces and nephews.
His father, Patrick Larkin, died in 2000.
Michael was born in Huntington on July 14, 1979 and grew up in Centerport, the youngest child of Patrick and Lois. He was a linebacker for the football team at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington and also played lacrosse. He graduated in 1997. He went on to study finance at James Madison University.
Since 2011, Michael worked at the Melville office of the Dallas-based logistics firm Worldwide Express, where his most recent title was area sales manager. He was vice president of the Father’s Guild at St. Patrick School in Smithtown, which all four of his children attend. He and Julia helped organize and run many activities at the school and at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Smithtown. Most recently, he helped coach his son Michael’s St. James-Nesconset PAL football team to the league championship.
He and Julia, a graphic designer and a 2001 Harborfields High School graduate, met in 2011 and married in 2013. His friends and family remember him for his warmth, love for his family and sense of humor, which included many recurring practical jokes.

Michael’s wake will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Moloney Funeral Home, 840 Wheeler Road, Hauppauge. A funeral Mass is Thursday at 11:15 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 280 E. Main St., Smithtown.
