On Saturday, March 13, 2021, Dr. Michael Arato lost his long and courageous battle with lung cancer at the age of 63. Michael was a loving husband, father, brother, stepfather and great friend to so many.
Michael was a humble man who never boasted about his multitude of achievements. He grew up in Plainview, NY, where he was a boy scout and president of his high school class. He completed his undergraduate degree at Union College in 1980, where he was an active member in the Delta Phi fraternity. Michael received his medical degree from Columbia University in New York City in 1984. He went on to University of Pennsylvania for his surgical internship, and then SUNY Stony Brook where he was chief resident in OB-GYN. Michael opened an Obstetrics and Gynecology office in Stony Brook, N.Y, where he worked for over 30 years. He delivered a generation of children, while still caring for his own two, Maria and the late Michael (Mikey), with his first wife, Anna.
On September 25, 2015, Michael married Glenna Wood, the best adventure buddy he could have imagined. Together they travelled the world, including many cycling trips in far away lands. Glenna Wood is without a doubt the true love of his life, and he knew how fortunate he was to have her by his side the last years.
Michael always put his family and friends first. He was generous to a fault, extremely intelligent, hysterically witty and funny, self-confident, kind to all and a true leader. He always remained humble. Michael was a voracious reader with far ranging interests, and would revel in an intellectual debate over a nice glass of wine. His many passions included his medical practice, cycling, good food, good drink, and good company. Michael’s passing leaves a giant hole in the lives of all who knew him, but fond memories of his smile, wisdom and spirit will keep him in our hearts forever.
Michael Arato was born on January 28, 1958 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Louis and Dolores (Savignano) Arato. He was also preceded in death by his son, Michael. He is survived by his wife Glenna, his daughter Maria, of Setauket, his step children RJ Voos, Kayleigh Voos & Ashleigh Voos of Mt. Sinai and his brother John Arato wife Nancy (Gross) Arato of Laurel Hollow children Johnny Nick and Talia, brother Louis Paul Arato wife Melissa (Lopez) Arato of Smithtown children Theresa and Louie. He was also loved by many cousins, in-laws, extended family, biking buddies Jon & Mark and 7 of his childhood friends. Together this group of 8 Plainview pals held a strong bond that will always be cherished.
