Melodie Elaine Wright-Laidlow was born on July 12, 1962 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies to her parents Philemon and Lurlene Wright. She was the eldest daughter to her two sisters. In 1969, the family migrated to Brooklyn, NY.
Mel, as she was affectionately known, was the loving wife of Earl Ian Laidlow, Esq. and wonderful mother to son, Ian. She was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, and attended Boston University and Pratt Institute receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. She was employed in several federal and private sector jobs before her retirement in 2013.
Mel was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and aunt. Family was of paramount importance to her, and she enjoyed gatherings with good conversation and plenty of laughter. Mel was a soror of Delta Sigma Theta and was very actively involved with Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Her health became challenging and Mel courageously battled with grace, dignity and faith. On August 10, 2018 she was called to eternal rest and departed this life peacefully at home in Central Islip, NY. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Mel leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Earl; son Ian; parents Philemon and Lurlene; sisters Karen and Denise; mother-in-law Terry; brothers-in-law W. Bernard, Steve and Nigel; sister-in-law Sandy; nieces Ahavah, Sydelle and Jamina: nephew Micah; and a host of beloved relatives and friends. As scripture says, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”. 2 Tim. 4:7
