Maryanne Edwards, a woman of faith, love, and generosity to all who knew her, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, at the age of 69 in Commack, NY, after a brave battle with cancer. Born in 1955 in Manhattan, NY, Maryanne's life was a testament to her faith-filled spirit, generous and caring heart, and devotion to her family and loving Savior, Jesus Christ.
Maryanne’s life began in Brooklyn, NY where she eventually met her neighbor and husband-to-be, Frank Edwards. She made many treasured, life-long friendships there. Her academic pursuits led her to achieve a Master of Arts in Special Education, a foundation that underscored her lifelong dedication to nurturing young hearts and minds.
Maryanne's heart was fullest when surrounded by her loving husband of 47 years, Frank Edwards, and her daughters, Meghan (Edwards) Larson, wife of Ryan Larson, and Grace (Edwards) Thompson, wife of Dave Thompson. Maryanne loved being “Mimi” to her 4 grandchildren: Kaylie, Kenzie, and Josh Thompson; and Bree Larson. Mimi loved visiting her grandchildren in Pennsylvania and Maryland, going on shopping excursions with them, and taking them out to eat. Mimi’s generosity and love knew no bounds. She spoke with her daughters and grandchildren every single day, and she prayed for them constantly. Each day, she encouraged them to “be a blessing to all you meet today.”
For many years, Maryanne served as a committed Social Studies Special Education Teacher at Brentwood High School. Her passion for American history was infectious, and she adored each of her students, believing in their potential and advocating for their success. She was their champion and stayed involved in their lives long after graduation. Even after retirement, Maryanne's commitment to education never wavered as she continued to tutor and home-teach, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives and multiple generations.
Beyond the classroom, Maryanne shared her expertise by teaching continuing education classes to fellow educators. Teaching these classes brought her a special joy because she loved listening to other teachers’ stories and telling them her own stories about teaching special education. Her dedication to her profession was matched only by her devotion to her family.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Maryanne will remember her for her unwavering faith in Jesus, which guided her through life's challenges and triumphs. She had been an active member in her church, Living Word in Hauppauge, since 1993. Maryanne was a woman whose Christ-like love extended beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of friends, colleagues, and students alike.
Maryanne found relaxation and happiness in Cape Coral, FL, where she loved to spend time. Her presence there was as warm and bright as the Florida sun, and she was cherished by her community for her kind-heartedness and spirited personality. She loved to walk through Publix and go out to eat at local favorites like Capt’n Con’s.
Maryanne Edwards leaves behind a legacy of love, education, generosity, and faith that will continue to resonate through the generations. She was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the lessons she imparted will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
The family of Maryanne Edwards wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, let us honor her memory by embracing the values she lived by: deep faith, love, and generosity to everyone around her.
