MARY A. WALSH

101 – It is with great sorrow that we mark the passing of our mother, Mary Anna Walsh, on January 22, 2024 in Palm Harbor, FL. She died peacefully at home in the company of family members.

Mary was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 10, 1922 to her parents Christina and Edward Hickey. She witnessed and lived through momentous historical events, spanning two centuries. Growing up during the Depression years was a formative experience that left her with an appreciation for thrift and financial security that served her well in raising a family on limited means.

Mary married Martin J. Walsh, also of Brooklyn and who was serving in the army at the time, in 1943. They were married for 60 years and had five children. They moved to their long-time home in Ronkonkoma, NY in 1968. Following Martin’s death in 2003, Mary continued to reside there, with the assistance of her son Philip. She went to stay with family in Palm Harbor, FL in 2023.

Mary did an exemplary job as a mother and homemaker, for which we are all the better.

Nothing was more central to Mary’s life than her Catholic faith. She was an authority on church teachings and certainly did her best to impart her faith to her children. Mary was a member of and regularly attended R.C. churches, including Good Shepherd Church in Holbrook, NY. In recent years, she watched mass on television every day and received communion brought to the house.

Mary loved musicals and was an avid reader and crossword puzzler. In later years, she made her way through a truly impressive number of audio books. Her tastes leaned toward mysteries and detective fare, but there is probably not a MacGyver or Doc Martin episode that she had not seen, nor a Danielle Steele story that she had not read or heard.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, brother Edward, and daughter Kathy. She is survived by her children George, Philip, David, and Susan; by her grandchildren Michael, Christine, Jeanine, Bridget, Erik, Maeve, and Christopher; by her daughters-in-law Katrin, Susan, and Pamela, and son-in-law James; and by great-grandchildren Grace, Finn, Will, Meg, Ally, Steven, Aaron, Bridget, and Peter.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Moloney Family Funeral Homes in Lake Ronkonkoma, NY. Mary will be returned to Long Island and buried at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, NY.

Mary will be greatly missed, loved, and never forgotten.
