Margaret Cacioppo Squicciarini
Norfolk, Virginia
Margaret Cacioppo Squicciarini, 86, passed away on October 30th, 2015 following a valiant battle with cancer. Her devoted husband, Peter James Squicciarini, cared for her through her illness and was at her bedside.
She was born on the 5th October 1929 in Brooklyn, New York on Stockholm St and was the beloved daughter of Gus and Mary Cacioppo. She always said her life had come a long way from Stockholm St.
Margaret grew up on Long Island, N.Y. She attended Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park. There she was the editor of the school newspaper and was forever an avid daily reader of every newspaper to which she subscribed.
She attended Aldephi University in Garden City where she earned a Bachelor’s degree and met her lifelong husband, Peter. Later she earned her Master’s degree at New Paltz University and then pursued a PhD at New York University.
Margaret taught in the Patchogue-Medford school for her entire teaching career. She taught a generation of students from the fourth grade to high school where she influenced many young people who went on to achieve and contribute so much in their own lives. Her passion was to mentor students, new teachers, and colleagues alike.
After retiring she continued her teaching as an adjunct assistant professor of science education at Stony Brook University
Her pride and joy were her family. Her son, Peter, a retired Navy Captain and daughter, Margaret, a senior official at the Department of Defense, owe their successes to Margaret, who as their mother, encouraged them in their life endeavors. She was their unconditional cheerleader.
Margaret was also a loving grandmother and great grandmother to a growing family. She loved her grandchildren Lisa, Peter, Mary Kate, Mathew, Mike, Catherine, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Her great grandchildren, Ella, Caroline, Charlotte and baby Maggie were yet another generation she loved and in return enjoyed their innocent love. She will be deeply missed by all family and friends but her legacy is her love and generosity that helped so many.
