Lorraine J. Mays, 92, of Bohemia, New York passed away peacefully on January 27th. A resident of Bohemia all her life, Mrs. Mays was an active member of her community. In her younger years, she was a majorette in the Bohemia Fire Department Band and until the time of her death, an active member of the Bohemia Historical Society Board of Directors. Before her retirement, Loraine was employed as a hairdresser at Mademoiselle Beauty Parlor in Sayville for over 30 years. She was fluid in, and loved all things Czech, and was always happy to share stories of Bohemia and its people and history. She was a recipient of the “Edward J. Kapela Citizen of the Year” Award; given by the Bohemia Fire Department in 2019. She loved to bake and was widely known for her famous Apple Strudel.
Preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Mays, she is survived by her niece Donna Schaefer and her husband Robert of Bohemia, her grandniece Dawn Engle (Schaefer) and her husband Steve of Columbus, Ohio, her grandnephew Edward Schaefer and his wife Janine (Eisenman) of Roosevelt Island, NY as well as great-grand nieces, Danielle, Olivia, Samantha and Shelby and many extended family members and friends.
Reposing Moloney’s Bohemia Funeral Home, 1320 Lakeland Avenue, Bohemia, NY where a religious service will be held Saturday 3PM. Visitation Saturday February 5th at 2-4 and 7-9PM. Private cremation Sunday. Funeral Mass Monday 10AM February 7th at St. John Nepomucene R.C. Church.
