Lawrence "Larry" William Postel, 81, set sail for his final voyage on January 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. A devoted father, grandfather, brother, and passionate boating enthusiast, Larry's life was a testament to the love of family and the serenity of the open water. In the last few years of Larry's life, he encountered some very stormy seas, but his immeasurable strength, fortitude, and toughness as a captain carried him to his ultimate destination.
Born on January 26, 1943, Larry spent his formative years near the coastal waters of Long Island where he discovered his passionate love for boating. He was rarely seen far from the docks, where his appropriately named boat “Pennies from Heaven” served as a second home for him and his wife Carolyn who passed in 2017. The boat was truly a gift from above that was admired by many, and Larry’s meticulous maintenance ensured it was always ready to set sail.
Larry's dedication to safety on the water led him to become an esteemed member of the Great South Bay Power Squadron, a safety and recreational boating organization. He earned the Grade of Senior Navigator and held the role of District Commander, overseeing the squadrons across all Long Island. As a Life Member with over 35 years of service, he tirelessly volunteered to promote safe practices among fellow mariners. His insightful advice, depth of knowledge, and encouragement kept many sailors smiling and safe during their own maritime adventures.
Larry retired from a fulfilling career as a Vice President of Communications for the Depository Trust Company, where he was known not only for his expertise but also for his mentorship of younger colleagues. In retirement, he cherished the time spent with fellow boaters and his family, especially his three beloved daughters: Laura, Debra, and Sandra. Larry was also fortunate to have one brother (Edward), five grandchildren (Ryan, Mikaela, Hunter, Aidan, and Haylee), one nephew (Michael), and one great-niece (Katie) whom he adored.
With his impressive attention to detail and unique style of tough love, Larry helped his family navigate life’s challenges. He will forever be remembered as “Daddy" by his daughters, and "Grandpa" by his grandchildren.
Larry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carolyn, who was commonly referred to as Nana Banana by her grandchildren. After marrying on July 4, 1964, Larry and Carolyn created a life rich with love and cherished memories. Unfortunately, Carolyn left him too early as she had other work to "study' in heaven and prepare for Larry's ultimate arrival.
Coincidentally, Larry departed for his new journey to heaven on the same day his beloved father, Edward, passed 13 years earlier. Edward and Carolyn had patiently waited for Larry, finally calling when it was time for him to take on a new role in heaven – the Director of OCD.
While Larry's spirit sets sail on eternal waters, he will remain anchored in the love and memory of those he leaves behind - fair winds and following seas, Captain Larry. Until we meet again, give hugs and kisses to Mommy. ❤️
Love always,
Laura, Debra, and Sandra
