Kathleen Hurley Linekin, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on June 6, 2024. Born on April 20,1932, Kathleen was raised in Middle Village, NY as the second child of the late James M. Hurley and Wilhelmina “Wilma'' Schmitt Hurley. As a child she liked school (but not Math), loved roller skating, going to movie theaters, visiting parks and museums and creating art.
After graduating from Newtown High School Kathleen enjoyed her career as a secretary on Wall Street. It was during this time that she met and married J. Everett Linekin. The couple moved to Brooklyn and had two children. A few years later they built their dream house, moved to Long Island and added one more child to complete their family. Kathleen’s life was centered around her family, home, and her deep Catholic faith.
After raising her three children, she transitioned back into the workforce, taking on a fulfilling role with the Suffolk County Department of Social Services where she worked for fifteen years until her retirement in 1997. Once retired, Kathleen was free to fully indulge her passion for politics, religion and world events. Her home was filled with books, newspapers, TV news and animated discussions. Additionally, retirement afforded her the opportunity to travel including touring the US and Canada, a memorable trip to Rome and the Vatican and finally a cherished pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Kathleen’s sense of humor was one of her most endearing qualities. She often surprised people with her quick wit and wide smile. In recent years, Kathleen moved to Texas and faced the challenge of Alzheimer's disease with the same charm and humor that characterized her life. Despite the struggles, she continued to laugh, make new friends, find beauty in the small details of the world around her, create art and remain a beacon of love and warmth for her family, who cherished every moment with her.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Everett Linekin, and her sister, Mildred Hurley O’Connor, Kathleen’s legacy lives on through her son Stephen and his wife Vicki, her daughters Carolann and Maureen, and her grandchildren, Andrew Anderson, Conor Linekin, Victoria Anderson, Cade Linekin, Laurel Linekin, Caroline Anderson, Olivia Gohn and her husband Thomas, and her great-grandchildren, Adalynn “Addie,” Gohn, Grace Gohn, and Elizabeth Gohn. Her memory will forever be cherished by her brothers-in-law, Gerald (“Jerry”) and Robert (“Bobby”) Linekin, her sister-in-law, Patricia (“Pat/Sissy”) Linekin, and the cousins, nephews, nieces, neighbors and friends whose lives she touched.
The loss of Kathleen leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew her. Let us remember her not with sadness, but with the joy she brought into our lives and celebrate her remarkable journey, her loving heart, and her steadfast faith.
