Joseph P. Smolski, 90 years of age, passed away at home on May 13, 2017. Born February 13, 1927 in Newark, NJ, he lived in West Sayville for over 63 years. He is survived by his loving and devoted children, Joseph and Marie, and beloved granddaughters, Wendy and Marissa. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie in 2010. He served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Japan at the end of World War II. He received the Army of Occupational Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. He served in the Merchant Marines thereafter. He was recently honored by Steven Bellone, Suffolk County Executive for his dedicated service to his country. He retired from his position as an HVAC Supervisor at Stony Brook University. Following a private family viewing, a Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Lawrence the Martyr RC Church followed with a graveside service with full military honors held on May 16, 2017 at St. Lawrence the Martyr RC Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Bideawee Pet Shelter.
