Joseph G. Mayo, Sr.

Joseph G. Mayo “Joe” passed at East End Hospice on April 23.

Born on March 24, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY Joe entered the U.S. Army in 1956 where he served proudly in the 504 Infantry Regiment and 82 Airborne Division. In 1988 he retired from the Suffolk County Police Department after 20 years of service in the K-9 Division, the first K-9 Unit in the NY Metropolitan area. A proud patriot and veteran, Joe actively supported our military and first responders and served on the Board of the American Legion Post 1545 in Center Moriches.

He was married to Loretta J Mayo with whom he had four children, Joseph Jr, Loretta, Christopher, and Daniel. Christopher, a special needs child, passed in 2015 and Joe served as a Board Member of Suffolk AHRC advocating for special needs children in Suffolk County

He is survived by his devoted sister Phyllis Hodge who raised Joe while his widowed mother Rose worked tirelessly to raise four children.

He is also survived by grandchildren Keith, Chelsea, Logan, Daniel, Jordan, Adam, and his second wife Helen and her sons James, John and Kevin.
