John Oscar Calen, 92, of Lake Grove, NY passed away at 11:43 PM on November 13, 2019. John was born 16 February 1927 in Long Island City, New York. His parents were both immigrants: Oscar Ludwig Calen (Sweden) and Helen Keating (Ireland). John is survived by his brother George Victor Herbert Calen of Luray, VA; Joan Calen of Mesa, Arizona; (his sister Ann Marinaro passed away June 8, 2019;) his son James David Calen & wife Minerva Calen of Holtsville, NY; his daughter Joyce Eileen Calen-Karnes & husband Danny Karnes of Mesa, AZ; his son Jeb Lindsey Calen & wife Cheryl Calen of Mesa, AZ; his daughter-in-law Linh Tran-Calen (his son John Robert Calen passed away Dec 22, 2010) of Poughkeepsie, NY. His grandchildren are: Andrew Karnes, Bryant Karnes, David Calen, and Aimee Calen all in Mesa, AZ. John was WWII Veteran, a retired elementary school teacher from the Connetquot school district, an airplane pilot, a former Volunteer Fireman and EMT in Holtsville, NY, and during his retirement was a world traveler – visiting many countries, and even going around the world in 76 days back in the 1990’s.
