John J. Kelly

d. April 4, 2018

John Joseph Kelly 9/30/1926- 4/4/2018John J. Kelly , 91 of Sayville, NY, died peacefully on April 4, 2018.  A man of faith, and a US Navy Veteran of WWII, John had a smile on his face and an encouraging word for everyone he met.  His easy going charm and warmth did not give away his challenging childhood growing up as a foster child in Queens NY in the 1930’s.  His resilience and positive nature was apparent to all people he met, whether long term friend, or brief encounter.  The truth is, he just liked people.  John possessed the perfect personality for sales, and excelled at it throughout his career.  He retired from Macy’s Roosevelt field after three decades of service.

Mr. Kelly was an avid golfer and being a “good sport”, would try and excel in all kinds of activities over the years, including swimming, bowling, dancing, tennis and even a 5K run with his children.  He was a communicant of St. John R.C. Church in Bohemia.

John is predeceased by his partner of 25 years , Alyce Gray.  John is survived by his former wife, Joyce Kelly of 30 years, and their 3 children, Linda Kelly ( John Austin) of Punta Gorda, FL, Jack Kelly of Houston, Texas  and Michael Kelly of Brooklyn, NY, five grandchildren, Bryan Kelly-Austin , Connor (Natasha Kelly) , Ian and Emma Kelly, and Jake McCurdy, as well as one great-grandchild, Oliver Kelly.  John is also survived by Doris Thomas, his girlfriend of 4 years who gave him love, devotion, and companionship during his final years living at Sunrise Village.

John’s family would like to thank the devoted and dedicated staff of Samaritan Nursing Home, Eileen, Jane, Christine, Steve, Franz, Luis, Joe, Erin, Donna, Peter, as well as Hospice for their untold kindnesses.
