John J. Duignan, age 75, died in his home in Bluffton, South Carolina on Wednesday, November 22, 2017. He was born on June 8, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York to his father, John J. Duignan originally fromMohill, County Leitrim, Ireland, and his mother, Josephine M. (Roedel) Duignan fromBrooklyn, New York City.
John was loved by all, and he loved them back. His first love was his family, his second was his work, and his third was sports. He never met a person he didn’t like. John was always ready with a smile, a joke, and a kind word for everyone. He was a business owner, and a salesman who could sell anything to anyone because of his natural charm. In his youth, John was an altar boy at St. Martha’s in Uniondale, New York, and was later a member of the Knights of Columbus. John loved the military, and served with pride in the United States Navy on the USS EDISTO (AGB 2)—one of the last icebreakers the U.S. Navy operated. His service took him around the world—from the Arctic to Antarctica; during which he crossed the Arctic Circle, the Antarctic Circle, the Equator, and the International Date Line. John was a natural athlete who especially enjoyed playing baseball, golf, and tennis, commonly playing, and winning, competitive events well into his 60s;even against those who were half his age. Most important, John was extremely proud of all his children. In his sales work, he would frequently show photos, and talk about his children in detail to complete strangers. The childrenwill miss him deeply.
He was the third of four children. He is survived by his older sister, Marilyn, and his younger brother, Barry. His older sister, Joanna, predeceased him last year. He was first married to Joyce A. Flaherty in 1967, who predeceased him. He had two daughters from this marriage; Kathleen A. Duignan and Margaret M. Duignan. He subsequently married Louise (DeFeo) Duignan in 1984, who predeceased him on November 22, 2017. He raised Louise’s two children from a previous marriage as his own—daughter, Renee Cuocco, and son, Jason Cuocco. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Jazmyn and Brielle Cuocco.
