Helen Detko

d. January 18, 2020

Helen Rose Detko, 95, of Holbrook, NY, passed away peacefully at her home. Helen was born in Elmhurst Queens, NY on June 19, 1924, the daughter of the late Anna and Samuel Clamser.
She was a member of Saints Joachim and Anne parish, where her own children would eventually attend school.
Helen was an employee at Estee Lauder, working in accounts receivable for 15 years. She was the Cub Scout Leader for her son’s troop and spent countless hours throughout her life-giving back or participating in community events – Juniorette leader, member of the Holy Rosary society and Golden Eagles Drum Corps parent supporter.
Helen was a talented woman who could sew, crochet or quilt just about anything. Some of the most notable pieces she gifted family members were quilted blankets to commemorate bridal showers and new babies or a dance recital or favorite sports team! Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will cherish the beautiful blankets made with love by GG.
A devout parishioner, Helen attended Sunday mass at the Church of the Good Shepherd where she made lifelong friends. There, she was a member of the Tuesday and Thursday senior groups where she crocheted baby hats for the hospital and occasionally gave crochet and quilting lessons to others at her meetings. She spent Saturdays with the Peanut Butter & Jelly Gang preparing sandwiches and wash up kits for those in need. Helen was also a member of the Friendships Garden.
Helen also enjoyed dancing and for some time during her life she went line dancing for fun!
A large part of Helen’s life was spent attending birthday celebrations, religious milestones, sports games and recitals for her grandchildren and great grandchildren throughout the years. A caring and compassionate person, Helen will be missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Helen is predeceased by her brothers Frederick Clamser and his wife Jeanine and Samuel Clamser.
Survivors include three loving children: William (Bill) Detko and his wife Robin Butterfield, of Ventura CA, Linda Kwarta and her husband Roman (Ray) of Holbrook NY and Lorraine Martino and her husband Joseph (Jay) of New Fairfield CT. Beloved grandchildren: Joseph Martino and his wife Kim, Roman Kwarta and his wife Alana, Marisa (Martino) Marotta and her husband Keith, Meredith Detko and Connor Detko. As well as great grandchildren: Landon Martino, Lauren Martino, Carter Martino, Luke Marotta, Isabel Marotta and Cassidy Kwarta.
A ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 9:45am at the Church of the Good Shepherd. A family reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Helen’s memory can be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, Attention: Development Department, 110 Bi-County Blvd., Suite 114, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
