It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Gregory Spencer O’Brien of Mastic Beach. Gregory, lovingly known as Greg, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024 at the age of 48 at Stony Brook University Hospital, after a heroic and unrelenting seven-year long battle with cancer. He is survived by his son, Zachary John O’Brien, his sister, Laura Somma, his niece and goddaughter, Angela Somma, his former wife, Michele Concepcion, his step-daughter, Jodie Santos, and his aunt Joanne Amoroso.
Greg will be remembered for many things: his strength, his leadership, his sense of humor, his incredible hard-working nature; but most of all, Greg will be remembered for being an extraordinary father. He loved nothing more than spending time with his son, Zack, coaching him in countless sports and activities, cheering him on in everything he did, watching Mets and Seahawks games together, going on adventures, dressing up together every Halloween, and creating lifelong memories and traditions with all of their family members and friends. Zack was everything to Greg. Their love was, without a doubt, the most powerful medicine throughout Greg’s battle. He will love and watch over his son forever and always.
Greg was very much the heartbeat of his family. He was the one everyone went to; the one everyone brought their future spouses to in hopes he would love them too- and he did. He loved differently than other people, but he loved them all with his whole heart. He had an incredible bond with his sister, niece, cousins, aunts, and uncles, which would extend to all their spouses and children as the family continued to grow. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for them and everyone he loved.
Greg was also a very loyal and devoted friend. The friendships he made in childhood and his early youth would continue to grow throughout his lifetime and theirs. The majority of his friends would agree, he was more like a brother to them than a friend. He wanted them to succeed, and would do anything he could to help them on their journey. He will continue to do this, for them and everyone he loves, always.
Greg will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His spirit, characterized by strength, generosity, and a genuine love for life, will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all the lives he touched.
