Gloria Vislocky lived a long life and was proud of making it to 93 1/2. She grew up during the great depression, born to hard-working, fun-loving immigrants. Her life was rife with hardships and our mother lived frugally throughout her life, never attached to material things. Gloria was extremely intelligent, a life-long learner, and had a great mind for numbers and organization. Having grown up during WWll she had a great sense of civic responsibility.
Gloria met her husband Joe at a dance at Prospect Hall in Brooklyn when she was 21. They were amazing dancing partners- so good that people would stop to watch them on the dance floor. They had three children, first Susan, then Joe, and then Donna. Her husband Joe died at the early age of 50 when Gloria was in her 40's- she was left to raise her kids with virtually no money. She picked herself up and developed a career with Suffolk County, Office of the Aging.
Gloria was extremely independent, sometimes to a fault, never wanting to burden anyone. Our parents had the same vision of how to parent, and taught us right from wrong, and let us be our own people.
Mom loved nature, watching birds, gardening, and was a gifted seamstress. (though terrible at giving haircuts!) She loved going clamming and crabbing and knew all of the best spots to do it on Long Island.
Gloria was a sweet and loving grandmother and great grandmother and was very proud of her children, as they are of her.
Family, church and charity were important to her. She knew her mind and everyone perceived her as a very strong and independent person. Her children spoke with her daily .... she will be missed greatly.
