Gerard Joseph Smith

Gerard (Jerry) Joseph Smith passed away on December 29, 2020, from complications from COVID-19. Jerry was born in New York City in 1932. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from New York University. He married Joan Martha Severynse in 1960 and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently. Jerry worked for various defense contractors, including Sperry, Fairchild Republic, and Grumman as an avionics engineer. He lived in Hauppauge for 58 years and was an active parishioner and volunteer at St. Thomas More Parish. He loved to ski and travel to many places. He is survived by his loving wife Joan and three children, Thomas Smith (Laura) of Ellicott City, MD, Maureen Brown (Scott) of Yorba Linda, CA, and Fr. Mark Smith of Columbia, PA. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Mayer of Granville, MA, and 4 grandchildren.
