Francine Freeman-Chung November 18, 1943 – April 13, 2025

Francine Freeman-Chung, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted servant of Christ, was called home to be with the Lord on April 13, 2025, at the age of 81.

Francine was born on November 18, 1943, in Harlem, New York, to Frank Freeman Sr. and Frances Freeman. She was the second of five children and was preceded in death by her older brother, Frank Jr. She is survived by her loving sisters, Gwendolyn, Lynda, and Berdena.

From a young age, Francine’s life was shaped by her deep faith and the guidance of her mother, which led her to attend The Salvation Army Manhattan Citadel with her sisters. Her commitment to ministry was evident early on, and in 1964, she answered the call to serve by enrolling in The Salvation Army’s School for Officers Training. She graduated in 1966 as a member of the Defenders of the Faith Session.

During her ten years of service as a Salvation Army Officer, Francine developed a profound love for youth ministry, dedicating herself to guiding young people toward the love and grace of Jesus Christ. In 1977, she married Melvyn Chung, a childhood friend from Manhattan Citadel, with whom she shared a deep and enduring love. Together, they raised two children, Bryn and Carlyn, and built a life centered on faith, family, and service.

The Chung family worshipped at Manhattan Citadel before later becoming members of Hempstead Citadel Corps. It was there that Francine served faithfully as the Junior Soldier Sergeant. She was not only a teacher of Salvation Army history and Christian doctrine but also a community builder, creating opportunities for fellowship through trips, events, and activities—from annual camping trips and Broadway shows to laser tag and ski outings. Her creativity and passion for fellowship left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Francine also extended her ministry beyond the church. She served as a mentor to young women at the Wayside Home for Girls, continuing her support even after the home closed. Known to many as a mother figure, she opened her heart and home to college students and others in need of shelter, support, and encouragement.

Above all, Francine was a devoted wife, a loving and supportive mother, and a cherished “Grammie” to her grandchildren—whom she affectionately called her “Lovelies.” In her later years, she found great joy in nurturing her growing family and being present for every special moment.

Francine’s legacy of faith, compassion, hospitality, and unwavering love lives on in those who survive her: her son, Bryn (Julia); her daughter, Carlyn (Nathan); her grandchildren, Hazel Savage, Adelyn Chung, Owen Chung, and Emmett Savage; her sisters, Gwendolyn, Lynda, and Berdena; her nieces, Tanica, Tiombe, and Jayette; and her nephews, Khari, Travis, and Ronald.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the grace, joy, and light she brought into the lives of so many.
