Edward Smith, 84, of Middle Island, passed away Dec 21,2021 after a brief illness. He is survived by his daughters Suzanne Trayhan and her husband Gary, Brenda Moody and her husband John, grandchildren Andrew Moody, Kaylyn Moody and her fiancé Daniel Murphy, his new great granddaughter Savannah and his sisters Kay Coppola and Ann Liga. He was predeceased by his wife, Judy, sister Gene Melynis, and parents Adam and Catherine Smith.
He was very active and enjoyed going to dances and playing raquetball. Each day he would open the newspaper and do his crypto quote and sudoku. Game nights were always fun with his favorite being Rummikube. He had quite the reputation for rearranging the board for a score. Ed was also a huge sports fan. Growing up he would watch the Brooklyn Dodgers and after they moved, he became a die-hard Mets fan. Fall Sundays were spent watching football, always cheering for the Jets. The man cave in his living room had three Tv’s side by side to not miss any of the action. In his younger days winter adventures including skiing, sledding, skating, and riding on the snowmobile. Summers included swimming in the back yard pool or trips to the local beach where he taught his daughters how to swim in the ocean.
He was known for his dry sense of humor and eccentric mannerisms that were quite amusing. There were frequent phone calls about dad tales, such as cutting into the main sewer line for the house at 5pm Christmas Eve and realizing he didn’t have everything he needed. Yes duct tape does work on sewer pipes. Or when he decided to make chocolate mousse because he doesn’t cook and didn’t want to use the oven. “Guess you aren’t supposed to take the beaters out while they are still running”. Since he did not cook, he would eagerly accept home cooked meals. He was known for enjoying a nice glass of red wine, chocolate, snacking on sunflower seeds and a pickle with his lunch.
He had a career in the printing industry as a dot etcher working on book covers and for the Suffolk Sun newspaper. He had a keen eye for color and could always tell what needed to be adjusted or if something was out of alignment. He had a reputation for being very good at what he did.
Growing up in Brooklyn, he was known as Sonny to his family and many still refer to him that way. He would tell stories about the antics with his childhood friends and driving to Florida. He met his wife Judy working in Manhattan. After they married, they purchased a house in West Islip where they raised their two daughters and enjoyed 29 years together before Judy’s tragic death. They enjoyed trips to his “in-laws farm” in the Catskill mountains and also resorts in the Poconos. They also visited Aruba and the Bahamas. He cherished spending time with his family including visiting Florida this past Thanksgiving where he got to meet his new great granddaughter, Savannah. He was a wonderful Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather and will be dearly missed.
