Hampton Bays

Desi Michael Menendez, D.C., aged 70, passed away peacefully at his home in Hampton Bays, New York on October 6, 2024. Born November 19, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York to Francis E. Menendez, D.D.S. and Mrs. Dorothy (Tatum) Menendez. Raised in Riverhead, New York, Desi married his wife of 50 years, Anne T. Childs of Smithtown on January 19, 1974 at Sts. Philip and James Church in St. James, New York. He and Anne raised their family together in Hauppauge, New York. His son, Michael, and daughter, Andrea, grew up attending school in Hauppauge and Desi could be found on the sidelines at soccer and lacrosse games, track meets and recitals. He worked as an X-ray and CT technician at St. John’s Hospital in Smithtown before earning a doctorate degree in Chiropractic from New York Chiropractic College in 1989 and practiced in the Smithtown area for over 30 years. He was dedicated to his patients, often meeting them at his office on nights and weekends, or whenever they needed help. An avid fisherman, Desi was his most authentic self as he fished and traversed the bays of eastern Long Island for over 60 years. Shinnecock, Tiana and Peconic Bays were his most favored waters. Fluke, flounder, and striped bass were his favorites. Desi always took time to share his “secret” fishing spots with his buddies and could regularly be heard over the walkie-talkie networks of the bays. He was a man of the East End and found peace and joy on the water. Above all, Desi loved his family and was most proud of being a husband, father, and grandfather. He and Anne enjoyed countless days on the beaches and bays of Long Island, playing Scrabble and Bingo with their grandchildren, and watching “The Bold and the Beautiful” for over 40 years! Desi is survived by his wife Anne Menendez; his son Michael Menendez and daughter-law Kerry Menendez of East Setauket, New York; and his daughter Andrea (Menendez) O’Connor and son-in-law Patrick O’Connor of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Desi’s most prized relatives are his five beautiful grandchildren, Jack, Carolyn, Bridget, Maggie, and Patrick. He will forever be known as their “Pop-Pop”. He loved them with all of his heart. Desi was very proud of the family and life he and Anne created together. In lieu flowers, please consider making a donation in Desi’s name to East End Hospice of Westhampton or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
