Dennis Murray really was Mr. Nice Guy. Born in Floral Park in 1946 to Marie and Joe Murray, Dennis was the 7th of 8 Murray siblings. He attended parochial schools in Queens Village where he shared many vivid memories of his time there. He went on to pursue a degree in accounting from Fordham as well as an M.B.A at Adelphi University. He proudly served in the United States Air Force. He was eager to fly, but that dream was cut short when it became clear that he was color blind. He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves, and for many years he worked in the Air Force Reserves helping to recruit and inspire young high school students to pursue careers in Air Force ROTC or to attend the US Air Force Academy. He had a successful career in finance working with J.P. Morgan and others for over 30 years
But these extraordinary accomplishments paled in comparison to what he felt were his greatest contributions. First, he married the girl in the yellow bikini, Joanne Margaret Stanfield. Dennis adored Joanne for her cute looks, her sassy personality, and her ability to cook just the way he liked it! Two years into their marriage, they were blessed with baby Michael. “Team Murray” loved their sweet house out in the country in Sayville. They took so many adventures: driving across the country to the Grand Canyon, visiting cherished family in Colorado, eventually finding a little piece of heaven in Hutchinson Island, Florida. The family grew when Michael married Jane Ruotolo of West Islip, and then the fun was really just beginning!
Grandkids changed Dennis! He was always Uncle Fun, but when he became Grandpa Dennis, well, Patrick and Kate were just his pride and joy! Over the years this team of 6 went ot great places: , Ireland, England, Colorado, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Vermont, Notre Dame, cruises, and Florida too many times to count! But Dennis probably just really loved being with the whole crew out to dinner at Buckley’s in Center Moriches.
The last few years have been so difficult, especially without his right-hand woman, Jo. But he carried on. He must have made a promise not to miss a single thing- because he didn’t! He made it to dance recitals, track meets, shows, sporting events of his many nephews and nieces, and of course, miraculously, he made it to his grandson’s recent graduation from The University of Notre Dame. In the end, none of it would have been possible without the help and support of Tammy and Liz. These selfless humans were there for Dennis when family just couldn’t do it.
Dennis has lived a life of goodness. There is no doubt he is reuniting with lost loved ones and receiving all the perks of heaven after a life well-lived! He will be missed by the Murray network! We’ve lost a key team player here, but he is now one of our guardian angels!
