Dennis L. Hirsch

Dennis L. Hirsch, a beloved husband, father, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home due to complications after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Dennis was the son of the late Louis C. Hirsch and Eleanor Hirsch of Lindenhurst, NY and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Hirsch, nee Skahill.

Dennis was the loving father of Scott Hirsch and his wife Tricia of New Hampshire and Timothy Hirsch and his wife Meghann of Colorado. He was a devoted grandfather to nine grandchildren, Autumn, Brendan, Cadence, Devin, Gavin, Dylan, Addyson, Hudson, and Avery.

Born on November 22,1944, Dennis led a life marked by a deep love for his family, the ocean, the great outdoors, and the countless lives he touched through his teaching.

Dennis proudly dedicated his career to educating and inspiring students as a marine biology and oceanography teacher at Sachem High School, “in Hirschland,” from 1970 -2001. As a teacher he combined his passion for the natural world with his commitment to fostering curiosity and respect for the environment. Whether exploring coastal ecosystems or sharing his knowledge in the classroom, Dennis’ enthusiasm was contagious and has left a long-lasting legacy.

Dennis served as a reservist in the United States Navy from 1966-1968 and as an officer during his active duty from 1968-1970. He served on the USS Maury and was then stationed on Grand Turk in the Bahamas. 

Dennis’ family and friends will forever treasure his humor, quick wit, wisdom, warmth, and enduring love. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and a profound appreciation for life’s wonders.
