Denise “D” Ullrich
Denise is survived by her loving mother Lola, her devoted husband Nicholas J. Ullrich II, son Matthew O’Connor (Jonathan Shaw), daughter Michelle Thompson (Dennis Thompson) and grandson Vincent.
Denise was a beautiful person with an infectious smile. She guarded her privacy to the end, but to those she trusted they were the privileged ones to have known her as such a caring person. Her greatest love was her family beginning with her birth in Brooklyn with Aunts, Uncles, Cousins all living on the same block with her Nana, the Matriarch, being the glue (and one of her early great loves) holding everyone together. Even the inevitable spreading to the suburbs of Long Island, Jersey and Connecticut including a small contingent throughout the country “D” constantly stayed in touch. She did this not only in conversation but with small personal notes, cards and gifts whether they be new items or something old and treasured to that person. A strong-willed woman through her early teens and into college, she raised her family and stood apart as a prominent community activist. Very few individuals could marshal support for a cause better than “D”. Classically trained on piano and guitar her love of music was passed to her children and all that knew her. She was a perfectionist who would thrill her Uncle Ralph by playing “Classical Gas” on her guitar at family gatherings. She founded the first all-girls Folk Group in high school that played at local churches and community gatherings. Always open to the new styles over her lifetime she easily traversed all genres from Classical and Classic Rock to New Age, Pop, Christian, Country, and yesterday’s new arrival. A diligent worker who was the ultimate team player will surely be missed by all the firms she worked for. “D” always got the job done without looking at the time. During her leisure time, “D” loved the small creatures in nature that surrounded her homes. Her final resting place will be overlooking the Long Island Sound where she will be surrounded by her many cherished creatures that she lovingly named: Sassy the hummingbird, Gertrude the turkey, Charlie the chipmunk, Gerry the Groundhog and Orville the Osprey and many more. As a friend she kept her early friendships throughout her lifetime and as new ones presented themselves “D” made sure they lasted. She was always there for her family and friends with a loving heart, whenever they needed her. In closing “D” was a mother who always gave an ear to listen followed by a strong, caring, opinion afterwards. Then with the true love of a Mom she took whatever time it took to rethink an issue in her mind and then, with a better understanding, revisit it.
Most of all “D” loved her children, and family, unconditionally.
