Chiminyan Sathyakumar

d. February 6, 2022

Chiminyan Sathyakumar, 73, of West Babylon, NY passed away on February 06, 2022 due to cardiac arrest.

Sathyakumar was born on September 18, 1948 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He graduated from Loyola College with a BS in Biology and Chemistry. He earned a Master’s in Medical Microbiology and further pursued his PhD in Medical Microbiology from Madras Medical College.

He was an expert in his field and was fortunate to experience an incredible journey through much of his career despite his humble beginnings. His dedication and hunger for knowledge started a global journey, from Institute Alfred Fournier (Paris) to Chase Farm Hospital (UK), and Erie County Medical Center (Buffalo, NY), preparing him for key positions including Chief Microbiologist and Infection Control Office at King Faisal Hospital in Taif, Saudi Arabia, Chief of Microbiology and Mycobacteriology Lab and a Quality Management Specialist in Microbiology & Mycobacteriology in the NYC Department of Health Public Health Lab.

One of his many contributions to society was establishing a school in Taif, Saudi Arabia in 1986, now known as the International Indian School-Taif, to educate the children of Indian nationals residing in Taif.

He was also passionate about his faith in Sri Sathya Sai Baba. As a loyal member of the organization, he embodied Swami’s teachings of Love All, Serve All and spent his free time organizing and volunteering in many community efforts. He loved to cook and used to prepare meals and serve them at the Bowery soup kitchen. He visited the Coler and Goldwater Hospitals to spend time with children and residents, spreading some cheer into their lives.

After 20 years of a fulfilling career, he retired from the NYC Department of Health Public Health Lab and focused the rest of his wonder years spending time with family, enjoying his home, traveling local and abroad, listening to oldies and reminiscing, and finally connecting with old friends through WhatsApp and obsessing with forwards!

He will always be remembered as being a jovial and social butterfly, a kind and loving brainiac father (who never failed in his attempts of bad dad jokes), a dedicated husband, a respected and esteemed colleague, and an unconditional friend to many.

Sathyakumar is survived by his wife, Krishnakumari Chiminyan; his children: Deepak Chiminyan and Divya Chiminyan and his siblings: Usha Sadanandan (sister) and Chimnayan Raghavan Suresh Kumar (brother). Sathyakumar was preceded in death by his father, Chimnayan Raghavan; his mother, Lakshmi Raghavan and his brother, Chimnyan Raghavan Prem Kumar.
