Carl Stephens, Jr.

d. October 25, 2021

Stephens-Carl, Jr of Centerport, passed away quietly on the afternoon of Monday, October 25, 2021 with his beloved son Taylor by his side.

Born April 15, 1953 to the late Carl Sr and Frances Stephens, Carl grew up on what some referred to as the “Laudman Family Compound”, a pastoral five plus acre property in Flushing, Queens, next door to his maternal Grandparents, Frank and Josie Laudman, and Aunt and Uncle, Ann and Chester Sobkiewicz. It was by all accounts, the epicenter of family life, and which served to forge indelible lifelong familial bonds. He attended Holy Family School, and, after the family moved to Oceanside in 1965, St Christophers School (Baldwin) and Maria Regina DHS (Uniondale), where he graduated in 1971. Carl attended the University of Dayton and later held various management positions in the retail food service industry, until a serious automobile accident led him to pursue studies in the computer field. It was during this period he met and married the love of his life Susan. In time, they settled in Ronkonkoma, where they raised their son and various pets until her untimely passing in 2011. Carl held various IT positions at Long Island Savings Bank, North Fork Bank, Capital One Bank and finally Bank United in Miami Lakes Florida, where he served as the Banks Chief Information and Security Officer (CISO) until his retirement in 2018. Due to health concerns, he returned back to Long Island from San Marco Island, Florida, where he resided until his passing.

Carl, like his siblings inherited his mothers quirky, and somewhat offbeat sense of humor which served him (and the rest of his siblings) well, when it did not otherwise get us into trouble. As such, we suspect that he might have preferred a traditional Viking funeral…were it not for the fact that he sold his boats (all of them). Thanksgivings were a sacrosanct  affair at his household, and one steeped in tradition… until the year we were first introduced to a “Turducken”. After getting over the initial shock, we would later adopt it as our National Bird. Carl could be generous to a fault, and did not suffer fools easily. He was a man of definitive likes and dislikes, the later made known to one and all by a one-word  reference to bovine discharge.
Carl lived a rich life, defined not by his career but by his family and his many and varied interests: sailing, fishing, travel, music, technology, and cars to name a few. He was an avid collector of just about anything; watches, art, guitars, even houses. To him, the world was an open book, all of which served his unbounded curiosity. He would tackle virtually anything which held his interest. He navigated by the stars and whichever way the wind was taking him. In later years his compass star was his Grandson, Luke, on whom the sun rose and set.
In addition to his son, Taylor and Grandson Luke, Carl is survived by his brothers Curt (Joan), Chris (Ellen), sister Deirdre, Nephews  and Nieces Matt, Andrew, Julia and Mackenzie.
He will be greatly missed
