Ann Marie Wypyski

d. March 5, 2021

Born as Ann Marie Christina Schattner on February 22, 1935, Ann Marie was the elder of two children, she and a younger brother Martin Jr. were raised by their parents Martin and Rose, in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York.  Ann Marie began her own family in Queens, later moving to Smithtown, New York, and finally, at age 68, retired with her husband in Las Vegas. Ann Marie went to Our Lady of Wisdom High School in Richmond Hill, NY, and St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York, graduating in 1957 as an RN.  She remained friends with many of her former classmates throughout her lifetime.  She worked at both St. Mary’s Hospital and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.  Her children remember her going to work at night in her white uniform, putting her eight children to bed, and being there in the morning to get them off to school. They sometimes wondered when she slept. She was a very hard worker. In 1956 Ann Marie met Bill Wypyski. They were married on April 12, 1958.  Eight children, Bill, Mark, Suzanne, Maribeth, Christopher, Matthew, Robert, and Thomas, joined them over the next twelve years.  Ann Marie always found time with all of her children to attend their plays, concerts, sports events, graduations, marriages, and visiting grandchildren soon after their arrival.  Both Ann Marie and Bill recently turned 86, and this coming April, they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.  There are so many beautiful memories of Ann Marie as a daughter, sister, wife, mom, and friend.  Most people loved Ann Marie, given her caring and non-judgmental nature.  She could be equally tough, with many of her children having the memory of her running after them with a wooden spoon, though they rarely were caught.  Ann Marie worked very hard to keep her eight children clean, properly dressed, keep up with housework and laundry, and cooking.  In her later years, Ann Marie had the chance to go on some well-earned trips with Bill, enjoy time playing Bunco with friends, and visit her children and grandchildren all around the country.  It’s important to note the love and dedication Bill gave Ann Marie, especially during the latter part of her life where she needed added assistance.  Ann Marie was a wonderful human being.  She was always thoughtful, hard-working, and loving. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends.  She taught us about caring for others, worrying about their safety, and finding the good in everyone.   Above all, Ann Marie believed in family, faith, and humility. She will always be on our minds and always in our hearts.
