It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Amar Tejpal. She was born in Punjab, India in 1935 and died on February 5, 2021. She is survived by her loving daughter Poonam and her loving sons Ramesh (Lorraine), Naresh (Sheila) and Ashwani. Her daughter, Neelam (Suresh), predeceased her. She is survived by her grandchildren Michael, Anjalee, Aneesh, Shawna, Alisha, Shivani, Naval, Priya and Armaan. She is survived by her loving sisters Prem, Usha, Kusum, Promela, Indu and her brother Satish.
She was the wife of a UN Diplomat, Naval Kishore (predeceased). She lived in India, Egypt, Sudan, the Middle East and New York City with her family. She loved traveling. She traveled to Europe, Africa and the Middle East during her life and was a great observer of people and their cultures. She learned to speak English and Arabic fluently with no formal training and learned how to drive in her mid 40’s all through her desire to be independent. Our mother was a loving, caring person who gave to her community through her work with feeding the homeless and for those in need. For more than 10 years she and her husband led the Sathya Sai Baba Center in Flushing, New York. Her great passion besides her family was cooking and gardening. She made everything from scratch and was known for her homemade spices and recipes. She was an avid gardener who treated her plants with the same love she offered her family.
We will remember her for her love, kindness and devotion to her family and care for her community. Most of all we will remember her as a pioneering woman and a loving friend, Mom and Grandmother.
